OTTLEY COTTAGE HOMES
SARAH ELIZABETH OTTLEY married JOSEPH A PARKINSON( born 1856). He was a farmer and they lived in Boston Lincolnshire..They were living at Witham Park, Londis Lodge, They employed a female housekeeper( aged 38) Joseph died in October 1939 at the age of 83.
Sarah Elizabeth Parkinson was the daughter of Sharpe Ottley (died April 1906) and Harriet Ottley (died March 1886).
Sarah Elizabeth was aged 74 when she embarked on a project to create something in Snaith (her
birthplace), which would honour her parents and would help women in need,
thereby carrying on the charitable legacy created by her father, Sharpe Ottley.
Firstly, she
purchased a parcel of land in June 1934 from Rowland Harrop Fish. It was part
of a larger piece of land called “Pinfold Close” situated off Butt lane in
Snaith.
In 1935, she
employed, local builders Durham and Ramsey to build two cottage homes on the
land. The business of Durham and Ramsey was originally started by Makin Lee
Durham in 1904 and was transferred to Fred Ramsey (his son in law) and Lawrence Ramsey (his
grand son) on 1st January
1929. In 1931 they also became funeral
directors, when they acquired another business.
On 5th
February 1936 a charity was set up with the name THE OTTLEY COTTAGE HOMES TRUST. Sarah Elizabeth transferred the sum of £400
in 2.5% consolidated stock to the trustees. (NB £400 equates to £36,000 in
value in 2023)
Its express purpose was to find, provide and endow cottage homes for poor-aged widows and spinsters of the parish of Snaith & Cowick.
At that time there were two
other charitable groups of houses in Snaith.
BEDE HOUSES
A row of three individual homes on Pontefract Road for poor men and
ALMSHOUSES (Lord Downes) on Beastfair.
Two more Ottley cottages were built in 1936, followed
by a further two in 1937. Durham and Ramsey were instructed to build all of them
to the same specifications as the original two.
This plaque was unveiled on the two cottages built in 1936.
In 1966 (2nd March) the trust was renamed OTTLEY COTTAGE HOMES TRUST.
In 2023, Ottley Cottage Homes Trust continues to provide affordable accommodation in
line with the wishes of Sarah Elizabeth and in the spirit of the philanthropy of her father, SHARPE OTTLEY.
